The Suicide Squad, the Most Loveble DC film directed by James Gunn, features a colorful and chaotic ensemble of anti-heroes and villains. One character stands out for her sweetness, compassion, and ability to command an army of rats: Ratcatcher 2, played by Daniela Melchior.

Ratcatcher 2 is the offspring of the original Ratcatcher, a Batman villain who used a device to control rats. She inherits his gadget and his affinity for rodents, especially her loyal companion Sebastian, a CGI rat who wears a tiny vest. She also has a tragic backstory that involves her father’s death and her struggle with drug addiction.

Melchior, a 24-year-old actress from Portugal, was relatively unknown to international audiences before landing the role of Ratcatcher 2. She had worked in Portuguese film and television, as well as voicing Spider-Gwen in the Portuguese version of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. She auditioned for The Suicide Squad after her agent sent her a self-tape request with a vague description of the character.

“I had no idea what I was auditioning for,” she told Refinery29. “They just said it was a girl who could control rats and that she was really sweet and had this connection with her dad.”

She amazed Gunn and producer Peter Safran with her tryout, which encompassed grasping an authentic rat in her hands. “I had one in my hands, another in my hood, and all of a sudden I’m there with James as he’s taking photos of the rats and me,” she told the Los Angeles Times. Subsequently, Daniela collaborated on a set with the actual rats, performing alongside Sebastian.

For Ratcatcher 2, we auditioned hundreds of actors worldwide,” Gunn said in an Instagram post. “But as soon as I saw @itsdanielamelchior, she was the one. She’s an incredible actor with a spirit that brightens the world.”

Melchior’s performance as Ratcatcher 2 has been praised by critics and fans alike, who have found her character to be the film’s emotional core and moral compass. She also shares a touching bond with Bloodsport (Idris Elba), who becomes a father figure to her. Melchior said she instantly connected with Elba, who helped her feel comfortable on set.

“He was always there for me,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “He was always making sure that I was feeling good and that I was feeling confident about what I was doing.”

Melchior also had fun with her co-stars, especially Sylvester Stallone, who voiced King Shark, a half-man, half-shark creature who tries to eat her at one point. She said she loved working with him and that he was “really funny and sweet.”

Melchior hopes that Ratcatcher 2 will inspire people to be more empathetic and compassionate, especially towards animals. She said she learned much from playing the character and working with Gunn.

“He taught me how to be fearless,” she said. “He taught me how to trust myself and my instincts. He taught me how to be a better person.”
